About Us

Hello and welcome to our site! My name is Kara Kelso (picture shown), one of the owners of Prairie Soy Candles. My mother, Kyla Huffaker, is the true creator of all the wonderful candles you see on this site. While I was involved in the candle making process in the begining and the original creation was that of both of us, my official "job" is not to make the candles anymore. Instead, my job is web design, customer service, and public relations. Any emails, phone calls, or questions about the site and products are directed to me.

Back in February of 2003 I began selling candles independently for another candle maker. In 2005, the candle maker made the choice to make candles exculsively for two main companies. I had no choice but to move over to one of the companies if I wanted to continue to sell her candles, although after about 2 months I decided that wasn't the direction I wanted to go in. The domain name 'soy-wax-candles.com' was something I wasn't ready to give up, so I began to make plans with my mother to make our own candles.

We knew soy was the only way to go because of personal experiences. Since we live in Iowa, finding 100% soy was our main concern. After a few weeks of trial and error, our finished candles became something we absolutely loved. We ended up adding a small amount of beeswax to 100% soy wax making a candle that burned slow and clean. Dyes were added in our first few batches, but ultimately decided to leave the dyes out.

Jelly jars were the main type of jars we started with, and expanded to melts, tealights, teddy bear jars, votive size, and even some novelty candles. We've decided not to go too far into the novelty line because we don't want to sacrifice our pure soy and beeswax blend for something not so natural.

Currently we sell mostly at craft shows, online, and are a wholeseller to a few offline shops. In the summer you'll find us outdoors at small town events and celebrations. A current list of our events can be seen on our local information page.

We have plans to add more types of candles to our regular line, as well as adding unique items here and there that will only be available for a short amount of time. Our scent list is also always being added to, so we offer a way for customers and others to stay up to date with our weekly additions. Information on our newsletter can be seen below.

If at any time you have a special request or would like to drop us a line, please feel free to do so! Since we are a small company, we treat our customers like friends in stead of numbers. If you drop us an email or call, we'll give you our full attention. Do understand that since we are a small business, it may take up to 48hrs to reply to an email or get back in touch.
